Big Pharma V. Regional Communities
The dangerous effects of highly addictive pain medications in America's Regional communities is a disturbing and pressing social issue. Victims can quickly become so addicted to opiates like Fentanyl, their lives are reduced to ruin. For the brothers, opiates have already taken their father's life and Garrett is on track to follow in his footsteps if he doesn't get the help he desperately needs.
Coercive Control
Unlike domestic violence where the signs are more commonly physical, Coercive Control is a dangerously secretive social issue affecting millions of American women. Commonly victims suffer in silence under the damaging influence of their abuser with no understanding of their situation or how to find support. This kind of psychological abuse often goes undetected for so long it becomes near impossible for the victim to escape. As a teenager, our film's protagonist has the foresight and strength of character to recognize her relationship dynamic as abusive and now, after 10 years of freedom she confronts her abuser head-on in the powerful closing scene of the film..
A Woman's Right to Choose
This remains a divisive political and social concern, particularly as conservative voices become more prominent and the fight to overturn Roe V. Wade reignites. Allie fights to assert and defend her right against strong opposition from the local brothers who are vehemently pro-life. Allie took control of her destiny as a teenager and remains steadfast in her conviction to that choice today.
Racial Injustice
Racial injustice is explored in multiple ways through the film. Allie & Nate, an interracial couple, are verbally and physically victimized by the White Nationalist brothers. Kirra shows persistent strength of character, holding authoritative sway as a bi-racial, part-Cherokee Police Woman in the isolated regional Oklahoma town.
